February 2001 — Prescription drugs can be a considerable cost. The Vermont Medical Society (VMS) and the Northeast Health Care Quality Foundation want you to be aware of ways to get the most for your money when filling prescriptions.
· Ask about generic brands.
· Shop around and compare prices before you fill your prescription. There can be a big difference! If you find a lower price, tell your usual pharmacist. He or she may be willing to match it.
· If you buy your medications from a new pharmacy, be sure to give them a list of all the medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs.
· If you're filling a new prescription, ask for a four or five day supply to make sure you can tolerate it. That way, if you have an allergic reaction, you won't have wasted money on a medication you can't use.
· Ask if there is a cheaper way to fill the prescription. Sometimes 40mg tablets are the same price as 20mg tablets. You may be able to save money by cutting a 40mg tablet in half for two 20mg doses. Check with your provider first!
